I saw this video the other day and posted it social media and subsequently got into a very interesting conversation with Australian National Team Coach Mark Lebedow who challenged the premise that we are in a society where young athletes are all entitled and need a trophy for taking part in anything.
His point of view is that in any generation there are athletes who work hard and they succeed not just expect a participation trophy. As a result coaches who suffer defeats are using this perception as an excuse to cover up their bad coaching practice. The salient point of this discussion was that even in defeat the coach has an opportunity to review and grow/ develop their coaching skill set. This is a philosophy I fundamentally agree with and Matthew Syed's book Black Box Thinking wholeheartedly supports this notion.
However, the cynic in me questions how long a coach is able to talk about processes and reflective practice when the Athletic Director, Board or supporters are only interested in the wins or loses. Football in this country is littered with such examples.
Coaching is incredibly complex and as coaches we are often the first person to be blamed when things aren't going well especially from people on the outside who do not fully understand the context, processes and dynamics that are at play in our teams. This doesn't mean that we need to devolve ourselves of responsibility when suffering a loss; instead see it as opportunity so adapt and evolve.
