Very interesting video clip. Currently we are in the processing of goal setting with every individual player within the academy set-up, never occurred to me to involve the parents in this process. Has anyone involved parents in this process and if so did you find it beneficial?. Currently we run two parent workshops covering all the logistics i.e. training, matchdays, communication, but again never asked what the parents want to know prior to the meetings although we have an open door policy where we encourage parents to communicate with academy staff. Again does anyone have other ways of working with parents?
Glad you liked the video David! If you wanted to check out some other ways members work with parents I recommend you check out this thread where you’ll find lots of links, tips and experiences shared https://www.connectedcoaches.org/spaces/17/coaching-children-ages-5-12/forums/managing-parents/5435/what-are-your-tips-for-managing-parents
Just to start...A long time ago, I suggested to a team that they should add up the number of tags made, not tries scored. A year later, they had a parent who recorded the scores every game. He loved the attention, because it was him they rushed to at the end of the game. Then, about four years ago, we had a touring team visit my team in Swansea (u13s). I thought they looked well organised from their website. Then I recognised the name of the coach...Gary Townsend, who was looking after the local U13 side. Gary was a top coach educator with the RFU, and I mean top in every way. They arrived with every parent counting something, whether it was tackles, passes or offloads. Amazing spirit. Now, I'm following closely the work of Richard Shorter, who's been part of the movement with Russell Earnshaw and John Fletcher to involve parents with their clickers!
